A Performance That Transcends the Stage
On September 20 and 21, the Gloria Campobello School of Dance—an institution with more than six decades of training generations of dancers in Baja California—will bring one of the most iconic works of classical dance to the stage of the Camafeo Theater Center: Swan Lake.
The production will bring together more than 25 dancers and mark a moment of special significance, not only for the institution but for the entire city.
This ballet, renowned for its precision and technique, will also serve as a tribute to teacher Margarita Robles, founder of the school and passionate advocate of elevating dance as a dignified professional career.
The Legacy of Margarita Robles
Margarita Robles dreamed that a dancer could make a living from their art in the same way a lawyer or doctor lives from their profession. That conviction continues to echo in every step of the students and graduates of the Gloria Campobello School.
This performance will also include an academic act celebrating the graduation of young talents, including a 15-year-old dancer who will become the youngest graduate in the school’s history.
The ballet will serve as a homage to Robles, as Swan Lake was the last piece she presented in her lifetime, and the one that most reflected her love for dance.
The Vision of Mtra. Lilian Tapia
Leading the Gloria Campobello School is Mtra. Lilian Tapia, a dancer and creator who has taken art beyond the stage. With a Ph.D. in Mental Health and graduating with honors from INBA, she has produced ballets that have toured theaters across Mexico and the United States. Recognized as a pioneer of Jazz Dance in Baja California, her greatest commitment is to continue the legacy of Margarita Robles, always remembering that
“art is the key that opens the soul, and focus opens the mind.”
Swan Lake: An Eternal Classic
A masterpiece by composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake premiered in 1877 at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre. The story—mixing love, betrayal, and the eternal struggle between good and evil—remains one of the most demanding ballets for any company.
Tchaikovsky’s evocative music creates an immediate connection between audience and dancers. Every movement, every chord, becomes an emotional bridge that allows one to feel the very essence of art.
In this version, the dancers of the Gloria Campobello School of Dance will preserve the ballet’s classical essence while also leaving their own mark, the result of years of discipline, training, and passion.
