From May 15 to 17, CETYS Universidad Campus Tijuana will become the meeting point for over 40 higher education institutions during the 5th National Workshop of Sustainable Mexican Universities, an event focused on exchanging strategies, challenges, and solutions in the field of environmental sustainability.

This annual workshop, backed by the international UI GreenMetric ranking, will gather academics and sustainability experts from Mexico and abroad to share insights across six key areas: infrastructure, energy, waste management, water usage, sustainable transportation, and environmental education. CETYS ranks among the top 15% of universities worldwide on the UI GreenMetric scale, which evaluates the environmental commitment of over 1,500 institutions globally.

International Guests and a Spirit of Collaboration

This year’s event will feature two prominent international speakers:
🔹 Dr. Jessica Barlow, from San Diego State University (SDSU), Director of the Center for Regional Sustainability and a key figure in the EPIC Network, will discuss collaborative models between universities and communities.
🔹 Dr. Carla Fresquez, from University of California, Davis (UC Davis), an expert in student engagement and climate action programming, will present flagship initiatives like the Climate Action Fellows and The Green Initiative Fund.

Both guests will lead conferences and workshops focused on strengthening sustainability in the academic environment and its impact on society.

Dr. Isaac Asuz Adeath, coordinator of the Institute for Sustainability Studies, emphasized that the event helps drive real change through education. Yanina Rubio Bojórquez, director of Campus Tijuana, highlighted the importance of open dialogue and the sharing of best practices aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The opening ceremony will also feature Riri Fitri, Global President of UI GreenMetric, who will deliver a keynote on implementing sustainable campuses in today’s global context.

This gathering represents a key opportunity for Mexican universities to strengthen their environmental strategies, learn from international models, and build collaborative networks that contribute to a more sustainable future.
